Zbigniew 'Gutek' Gutkowski is in second place in the multi-stage round-the-world Velux 5 Oceans, trailing Brad van Liew by 84 miles at last report, after going aloft in 4-6m waves to fix a halyard on Day 8, and then injuring himself when his head ended up in the path of the wind-generator propeller on Day 9.  Seen above, he climbs the mast during his preparations before the race, in a photo by Juerg Kaufmann.  Also see a 3D version of this image below.

From Gutek:

Yesterday I couldn't write, was too tired. I had to climb up the mast once more. This time because the top gennaker halyard fell off his roller. I couldn't hesitate because that would cost me a loss of another sail. What can I write more about it? As I came back down I was achy all over because I had to hang on to the mast quite firmly. If you are sailing through 4-5 waves they not make your mast climbing easier.

Now I am sailing for the 5-th time in my life this route and for the first time in a region where normally you are using the spinnaker all time there is a need to sail upwind. All that is because 200Nm ahead there is a tropical low pressure system building up. Of course I want to go around it because I don't want to get into a very strong wind from the opposite direction that I need. Regarding the information we get from the race headquarters Brad has a very similar plan.

Cheers,
Gutek
