America’s Cup champion BMW Oracle Racing team has been in preparation this week for the Louis Vuitton Trophy Dubai, the final event of the Louis Vuitton World Series.

With racing for the six teams scheduled to start on Sunday, BMW Oracle Racing has been practicing on the waters off the Dubai International Marine Club aboard a pair of V5 America’s Cup Class sloops.

Two of the yachts, USA 87 and USA 98, have been lent for use in the event by BMW Oracle Racing.  Another two sloops are on loan from Emirates Team New Zealand.  The four yachts have been equalized to make them as similar as possible in performance for the match racing regatta.

BMW Oracle Racing last raced the yachts at the 1851 Cup in Cowes, England, in August.

“This is the same crew that we sailed the 1851 Cup with, and it feels good,” said tactician John Kostecki of the U.S.  “When we've been out training here, it feels like we've been together for a while now.”

BMW Oracle Racing won the 33rd America’s Cup last February, culminating a ten-year quest by team owner Larry Ellison.  It was also the fourth Cup win for team CEO Russell Coutts, who previously skippered three winners (1995, 2000, 2003).

With the victory, skipper James Spithill of Australia became, at 30 years of age, the youngest skipper to ever win the America’s Cup.  Spithill’s remarkable 2010 also saw him named the Australian Male Sailor of the Year for 2009/10 and winner of the RC44 class World Championship.

The Louis Vuitton Trophy Dubai stands to be the team’s final regatta in ACC sloops.  The 34th America’s Cup will be raced in wingsailed catamarans.

USA 87 and USA 98 were the culmination of the design team’s seven years of experience researching and refining the ACC sloop.  Design team coordinator Ian “Fresh” Burns is fond of the yachts that measure approximately 80 feet length overall.

USA 98, especially, was a boat that although not revolutionary, resulted from a combination of a huge effort combined with a great depth of experience from a legendary collection of designers.”

Racing for the Louis Vuitton Trophy begins Sunday, Nov. 14, and runs through Saturday, Nov. 27.  The team’s draw in the round robin will be determined Saturday evening, Nov. 13, at the Opening Ceremony.

The full 17-man crew includes:

Dirk de Ridder (Netherlands) Mainsail Trimmer
Shannon Falcone (Antigua) Mast
Ross Halcrow (New Zealand) Upwind Trimmer
Murray Jones (New Zealand) Mainsail Traveler/Strategist
John Kostecki (USA) Tactician
Jono MacBeth (New Zealand) Starboard Grinder
Brian MacInnes (Canada) Port Grinder
Matthew Mason (New Zealand) Pit
Ian Moore (Great Britain) Navigator
Joey Newton (Australia) Downwind Trimmer
Gilberto Nobili (Italy) Aft Grinder
Dean Phipps (New Zealand) Runners/Pit Assist
James Spithill (Australia) Skipper/Helmsman

Vincenzo Onorato, President of Mascalzone Latino, is moved by this last commitment of the ACC.  "In Dubai, the "old ladies" that have accompanied us in the last 20 years of America's Cups will go on the water.  These boats have made Italians dream and get passionate and allowed to deliver new technology standards applied to sailing and boatbuilding.  The next Cup, as everyone knows, will be sailed on much faster and complex yachts, but everyone will remember with affection this era.  I think Dubai will be able to write the last page of this era’s history with great pomp, in a parade of the world’s the strongest teams.  "

Marco Savelli, Team Vice President, looks confident in this historic event: "I think that after the excellent second place in Auckland, and the fifth in La Maddalena, where we almost got into the semifinals, this year our crew has proved capable of achieving good results.  On this occasion as well, despite the top level of the competing teams, I expect a fight to the last gybe.  I trust that Mascalzone Latino will obtain good results, and I can assure that we will do our best because we are aware of the responsibility to mark the history of this generation of boats with a nice final memory.  "

The host of the regatta will be Dubai International Marine Club will hold the regatta, usual organizer of the most important marine events in the southern part of the Gulf.

"To be the culmination of a generation of America's Cup boats is a very significant and exciting for us and for everyone involved and passionate about sailing.  Dubai will have the opportunity to once again be in the spotlight of the international world of sport," states an enthusiastic Saeed Hareb, Managing Director of DIMC.

From November 12 to 27, the six teams joining this last Louis Vuitton Trophy (All4One (FRA-GER), Synergy (RUS), Artemis (SWE), Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL), BMW Oracle Racing (USA) and Mascalzone Latino (ITA)) will fight for the last time on legendary boats, the America’s Cup Class boats, which were launched in 1990.

The event will rely on four boats (USA 87 & USA 98 -- BMW Oracle Racing’s boats, and NZL 84 & NZL 92 -- Emirates Team New Zealand’s boats), which will form two pairs of even ACC boats for the teams to offer intense regattas and duels to the public on site and on the live web TV program.

The match-racing format of the competition will consist in 4 phases: two Round Robins (from Sunday 14 to Tuesday 23), semi-finals (first to two points), and one final on Saturday 27 (first to three points).

The French-German team arrived in Dubai on November 7th, and is already training since 5 days with Emirates Team New Zealand on a race course that promises an incredible show in the heart of a city recognized as the “Pearl of the Persian Gulf.”

Sebastien Col, Helmsman:
“The training went really well.  We had the opportunity to train with Emirates Team New Zealand on site, with the boats that will be used for the event, which is ideal.  Moreover, we work here with a coach who has a lot of experience: Kelvin Harrap (formerly TeamOrigin), and who brings us a lot of input.  Having been contacted by Team New Zealand is really gratifying, and that gave us a lot of confidence, while knowing that they could have invited some other team.

"We learn a lot sailing with them here, as well as from our coach.  Team New Zealand puts a lot of pressure on its competitors in general, as they have a strong ability to put a lot of intensity in the duels.  Psychologically, we have seen all the season that all the other teams are a small level under.  But I think that the difference is now getting smaller and smaller, and we’ve seen some teams giving a hard time to the Kiwis.

"On our side we have improved all along the season, and we certainly hope to do even better here, as we feel stronger and stronger as a team, being in terms of sailing or in terms of management.  The best teams are here, it was important and a real choice from us to be here.  The level is very high, it is now up to us to show what we are able to do.”

Matti Paschen, Spinnaker trimmer:
“I have been sailing here before with our RC44 team called Sea Dubai.  The team is based here, so we did a lot of training and RC44 races here, so for me it’s kind of a 'second home'.  It’s good to come back and race here again.  The training week with Emirates Team New Zealand has been really good.

"We tried some new things as we might have new race courses here, that will be much shorter.  So it will be much shorter upwind, and put a lot of pressure on the whole crew.  The crew work will be very very important here, as well as the starts.  So we trained on all that with Team New Zealand, which is “THE” team to beat or to train with.  So for us it’s been really good and really intense so far.

"We did some very good racing in La Maddalena and have been on quite a high level, finishing first in the Round Robin and ended up 3rd in the event, so we had a really good regatta.  We didn’t sail together on such a big boat since then, but now after the training week we feel the same good team spirit again.  Only six teams in the competition here don’t make it any easier, as all the good teams are still here.  The racing will be even harder.”

All4One finished 5th at Louis Vuitton Trophy Nice, 5th at Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland and 3rd at Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena.
