Tuesday 12th October
Emirates Team New Zealand wins Act Two!

Lack of wind cancelled the final day of racing in Act Two, leaving ETNZ at the top of the standings. The Kiwis victory represents a real reversal of their fortunes from one month ago in Marseille. Faced with the badly damaged NZL-82, her hull too far gone to be repaired for the fall regattas, the team rallied by air shipping their number two hull, NZL-81. Arriving just days before the start of Act Two, ETNZ worked hard to get the boat set up and dialed-in.

The second surprise of Act Two was the reassertion of Luna Rossa's position in the Cup hierarchy. The Italians, a further evolution of the 2000/2003 Prada efforts, opened the regatta by beating pre-race favorite BMW Oracle, and rarely looked back after that, beating every team at least once.
 


Tuesday: Final Day of Act Two

In the final day of Act Two racing, light wind forced cancellation of showcase matches.  Leader Emirates Team New Zealand, Alinghi, and BMW Oracle were all set to face each other in turn while #2 Luna Rossa was to match up against +39, K-Challenge, and Shosholoza. Three flights of races were planned, but ultimately cancelled after the time-limit expired in the first flight of the day.

Monday October 11th:

Three flights. Luna Rossa takes down Alinghi, ETNZ takes down Luna Rossa. BMW Oracle, +39, and LeDefi all win. ETNZ still tops the leaderboard with three races left to sail in Act Two.

Saturday October 9th:

Big races, broken gear, and close finishes: With up to 25 knots blowing from NNE, the scene was set for some spectacular action and fans were not disappointed. Close quarter dueling in the pre-starts, penalties given, two premature starts, blown spinnakers and much more.

Shosholoza Wins Fans

"Geoff Meek (captain) is a famous sailor here ... but the team is mostly amateurs and young sailors who are here because of their African dream to succeed.

"The Spanish people identify very strongly with this. They love Shosholoza. We saw it at the opening ceremony fleet parade when Shosholoza sailed past - she got the biggest cheer from the Spanish crowd."

What's it like in the 18th man spot on Emirates Team New Zealand during a race?  The NZ Herald's Julie Ash had the chance to out.  "My instructions are to stay at the back of the boat and out of the way. No problem. There's a maze of ropes and equipment in front of me, some of which can rip fingers off in seconds."

Calling the Breeze

Meteorological expert Roger Badham says that while Valencia doesn't have Auckland's wind extremes, the new home of the Cup is an especially difficult place to predict the weather for sailing. "The breezes here are controlled by things that are much more delicate and much more difficult to put your finger on."

Live 2D race tracker and audio webcast in English and French available at the Official America's Cup web site (tracker offline).
 

Broadcast Options

Portions of the racing were broadcast on the TVE network in Spain, with a program covering Act Two beginning October 8.  There are currently no plans for live television coverage of Act Two outside Spain, but taped highlights will be available to broadcasters in each country.
 

Tune in to Alinghi TV

Internet webcast program will help fans follow the team on and off the water.

"For Acts 2 and 3 in Valencia, which begin October 5, Team Alinghi plan to pilot the concept with a race summary, analysis or interview each day following the racing at 5:30pm (GMT+2)," explained Bernard Schopfer, Team Alinghi Director of Communications. "Those who miss the live version will be able to view the broadcasts as a replay."
